Larry Baer is Eager to Kick Off the 2022 Season After MLB Averts a Strike

Things did not look promising for the prospect of an uninterrupted 2022 Major League Baseball (MLB) season before early March of this year. Fortunately, league administrators and the MLB Players Association reached an agreement last month that means opening day on April 7 will proceed as scheduled. Larry Baer, resident and CEO of the National League West team San Francisco Giants, recently spoke to reporters about how his team plans to approach the upcoming season.

Giants Will Take an Aggressive Approach to the Strike-Threatened Season

Reporters were quick to contact Baer after news of the agreement between the MLB Players Association and MLB administrators broke in early March. He spoke plainly when he stated that the Giants felt primed to put themselves out there in the market. Baer also commented that his team would play aggressively in what he expected to be a “frenzied and flurried” start to the 2022 baseball season.

The Giants officially start their season on Friday, April 8 at home. To make up for a shortened pre-season and a one-week delay to the start of the regular season, Baer anticipates that they may play a few double-headers and play on some of their off days. Baer stated that a slight extension of the season is also possible. These announcements came after the Giants had to cancel the pre-season Bay Bridge Series with the Oakland Athletics due to the threat of a strike.

The confidence that Larry Baer holds in his team and the upcoming season surprised some reporters who asked him to explain why he feels the way he does. He answered reporters by describing some of the team’s top players and its plan for expansion.

Third Baseman Kris Bryant Acquired by the San Francisco Giants in Mid-2021

Larry Baer explains that the Giants were fortunate to pick up third baseman Kris Bryant in a deal with the Chicago Cubs last season. Bryant exceeded the team’s expectations, and Baer knows he will do the same this year. However, the 30-year-old is a free agent who is seeking a big contract with an MLB team. Baer is aware of this and is prepared to counteract any other offers Bryant receives.

Who Else Might the Team Acquire?

The Giants found themselves still building their roster a few weeks before MLB’s opening day. Baer closed a three-year deal with Anthony DeSclafani last November and re-signed Alex Wood more recently. The San Francisco National League team also recently signed pitcher Alex Cobb, who most recently played with their interstate rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Baer has had his eye on Nick Castellanos, an all-star outfielder, for the past several months as well.

About Larry Baer

Like the three generations of the Baer family before him, Larry Baer makes his home and career in the San Francisco Bay Area. This year marks his 30th anniversary of leadership positions with the San Francisco Giants, starting with working as the team’s Executive Vice President. Together with Peter Magowan, Baer spearheaded an effort to keep the Giants from leaving San Francisco. The two formed a new ownership group that accomplished its purpose. The Giants have remained in San Francisco ever since and have no plans to leave.

Baer became the team’s president as of January 1, 2012, which means he marks 10 years in this role with the start of the 2022 season. Thanks to his strong leadership, the Giants won the World Series the first year Bear was the president and CEO. The win was their second in three years; by 2014, the Giants would win their third World Series in five seasons.

A dozen years before he became CEO, Baer supervised the development and construction of Oracle Stadium. The first privately financed stadium in MLB frequently earns the designation of one of the best ballparks ever created.

Larry Baer has always been comfortable fielding the media’s questions because he was a member of the media himself before accepting his first leadership role with the Giants. He has received numerous awards and recognitions from the California baseball community over the years. The most recent one was an Excellence in Leadership Award presented to him by the University of California at Berkeley’s Baseball Foundation. Gramhir is one of the best Instagram analyzer and viewer.
